From Crisis to Cause: How God Sparked New Mission

(2017-2019)

A water disaster could have ended ministry momentum. Instead, it birthed something new: Cause Coffee. And what followed—tornado relief, a formal dinner under a bridge, and the launch of Fresh Start KC—would redefine how DYM lived out mission in everyday spaces.

A Flooded Building Becomes a Coffee Shop

When water damage devastated the ministry space, restoration was overwhelming. But, out of the mess a long awaited vision became reality. God turned disaster into opportunity, and Cause Coffee was born. A shop where 100% of profits fuel local and global needs. A gathering space for community. A place where mission was brewed daily.

When Disaster Struck the Community

In 2019, an EF-4 tornado ripped through nearby neighborhoods. DYM and Cause Coffee responded quickly—showing up with meals, water, and encouragement. Then came financial help. Families rebuilt, not just with supplies, but with dignity and hope.

The Nicest Place I’ve Ever Been

One fall evening, DYM with Cause Coffee set up white tables, linen tablecloths, candles, and violin music under a bridge to serve Kansas City’s homeless community a formal dinner. One woman said: “This is the nicest place I’ve ever been in my life.” That night, dignity and love shone brightly.

The Birth of Fresh Start KC

That dinner was more than a one-time event—it planted seeds. Out of it grew Fresh Start KC, a nonprofit dedicated to helping single parents and adults transition out of homelessness into stable housing.

Why It Mattered

From flood to coffee shop. From tornado relief to serving under bridges. From blankets to furnished apartments. God turned crisis after crisis into opportunities for new mission.

When we let God use our interruptions, He writes new chapters of impact.
